Microsleeping driver takes out four cars

Queensland Police have released startling video of the moment a driver fell asleep at the wheel and smashed into four other cars.

A police officer with a camera mounted on his cap witnessed the moment the ute crashed between a parked car and another moving vehicle next to a speed trap on the Gold Coast.

It then swerves into a row of cars stopped at the side of the road after they had been pulled over for speeding, before coming to a stop at the front of a childcare centre.

Along the way a whipper snipper and a chainsaw are thrown from the back of the trailer attached to the ute, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.

The officer rushes to the crashed ute to check on the driver, who appears to be in shock.

"Calm down, he didn't mean to do it," the policeman says to an angry man whose car was smashed in the accident.

Senior Sergeant Peter Liebig said the accident was most likely caused by a microsleep.

"This is a lesson on why fatigue is one of the fatal five," he told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"You have to feel sorry for the drivers who were stopped for low range speeding tickets only to have a car slam into the vehicle at the end of the line."
