Michelle Payne to front racing inquiry after testing positive to banned substance

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne will front a Racing Victoria inquiry after returning a positive test to an appetite suppressant.

Payne, who last week competed at the famous Royal Ascot meeting in England, will face the stewards in Melbourne today.

It follows the finding of the substance in a sample she provided at the recent Swan Hill carnival, in northern Victoria.

The high profile jockey, who also holds a trainers' licence in Victoria, gave a urine sample at the Swan Hill Cup meeting on June 11.

Racing Victoria stewards said Payne was stood down from riding in races and trackwork on June 23.

Payne, 31, became the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup in 2015.

Her riding career was threatened after she suffered serious injuries in a race fall in May last year.

Payne underwent surgery for a torn pancreas following the fall in Mildura.
