Anti-war protesters arrested outside Met Gala

Multiple anti-war protesters have reportedly been arrested in New York as they marched on the Met Gala to call for an end to the Gaza conflict and for Palestinian freedom.

Photos from outside the celebrity fundraiser at the Metropolitan Museum of Art showed police grappling with one protester, while others gathered bearing signs and Palestinian flags.

The New York Times said police had erected barricades outside the Gala, before carrying out arrests a block away on Madison Avenue, prompting complaints from protesters.

Pro-Palestine chants could be heard from multiple gatherings.

The Independent reported that the New York Police Department confirmed there had been multiple arrests, but declined to provide further details.

The protests are the latest in a storm of anti-war activity around the US, which has largely centred on college campuses.

Protesters at a number of US universities have clashed with both police and counter-protesters.

They are calling, among other things, for the universities to cut ties with companies profiting from the current invasion of Gaza.

More than 34,000 people have been killed by Israeli attacks, which were launched in response to the October 7 terrorist attack carried out by Hamas last year, which saw 1200 Israelis killed and hundreds taken hostage.
