Members of Melbourne’s homeless community have issued an ultimatum to the city’s Lord Mayor – provide housing, or they will stay put in City Square.

The group set up the camp site and said said they will stay until the government guarantees accommodation.

“We’ll stay until they give us a house,” one of the campers, John Huggins, told 9NEWS.

Victoria Police are keeping a presence near the site, however the campers insist they are not violent, and just need housing.

There are an estimated 120 people who sleep rough in the city’s CBD, and more than 22,000 homeless people across the state.
