Melbourne walkway named after AFL great Neale Daniher

A new walkway at the MCG has been named after AFL great Neale Daniher to honour his work raising money for Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews today unveiled Daniher's Way, which runs from William Barak Bridge to the MCG.

The former Demons coach has raised about $50 million for medical research to find a cure for the debilitating disease.

He was diagnosed with MND seven years ago.

Mr Andrews said the Victorian Government was "so pleased" they have been able to acknowledge Mr Daniher's dedication and fundraising efforts in such a commemorative way.

"Neale Daniher has achieved so much," he said.

"Nobody would have thought any less of him if he and his family had simply decided to work out a bucket list for things they wanted to do and tick that off.

"Instead, in one of the greatest acts of kindness, one of the most generous things that I have ever experienced in my public life, Neale Daniher and his family have devoted these precious days, weeks, months and I'm so pleased to say - years to the fight against this insidious disease."

Mr Daniher's charity, FightMND, raised an incredible $11.9 million across the country last year as part of the annual Big Freeze fundraiser event.

The premier said the government would give a further $1 million to the charity.

"This is a small gesture to a man who has made a huge contribution to football, to medical research and Victoria."

Daniher welcomed the honour and the government's pledge for additional funding.

"I thank the Victorian Government for this honour," he said.
