Two inbound lanes on Melbourne's Monash Freeway have reopened following a large truck fire earlier.

The truck was travelling on the Monash Freeway between the Springvale Road and Blackburn Road exit when it caught fire at 6.45am.

According to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, the driver of the semi-trailer pulled over after noticing the cabin was on fire.

He managed to escape before flames consumed the vehicle, which was carrying refrigerated food stuffs.

Five fire trucks were called to the scene.

VicRoads advises motorists to use the alternative exit at Heatherton Road and on to the Princes Highway, an outbound right lane also remains closed.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman says the driver of the truck wasn't injured and it will take some time to clear the scene.

Motorists are still experiencing lengthy delays back to Studd Road.
