Trains resume after suspicious package sparks commuter chaos at Melbourne station

Trains have resumed along Melbourne train lines after a suspicious package was deemed safe by the bomb squad.

North Melbourne station was earlier evacuated and replacement buses were brought in after the shutdown in the middle of peak hour.

The closure has affected trains on the Craigieburn, Upfield, Sunbury, Werribee and Williamstown lines.

Trains are moving normally again after the incident triggered major delays through the morning.

It's unclear what the suspicious item that sparked the chaos was.

Commuters took to social media, capturing photos of the massive queues at train platforms across the city. 

Meanwhile, Uber cashed in on desperate commuters looking for another way to work, with surge pricing coming into effect. 

The Herald Sun reports an 11-minute trip from North Melbourne to Flinders Station skyrocketed to $90.
