Melbourne children made a grisly discovery this morning after finding a man dead at the wheel of his car, which had crashed down an embankment at Melton.

Police believe the 46-year-old man crashed his Toyota Landcruiser off the side of the Western Freeway late last night but was not discovered until about 11am today.

The vehicle was partially submerged in a creek and the group of teenagers apparently stumbled across the wreck while playing.

Victoria Police’s Acting Senior Sergeant Liam Gardner said investigators believed the crash occurred overnight.

He said the vehicle may have clipped the road’s railing and then flipped down the embankment.

“He would have died quickly,” he said.

Specialist rescue police removed the man’s body and the crashed vehicle was later towed out of the creek.

Police are now investigating if speed was a factor in the crash.

“Speed, alcohol or drugs – none of those things mix with driving,” Sgt Gardner said.

“Any crash where someone has lost their life is a horrendous way to go for sure this one is no different.”

Police are still piecing together what exactly occurred and have urged anyone with any information to contact them via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
