Jailed cop stabber was on bail at time of attack

A violent thug has been jailed for seven years and six months for stabbing an off-duty police officer in his own home.

Jade Hunia, 20, forced his way into Senior Constable Daniel Yeoman's Wartirna South property in the early hours of the morning in November 2016.

The heavily-intoxicated teen assaulted the officer's wife before grabbing a kitchen knife and stabbing the victim between the eyes as he demanded he hand over car keys.

The terrifying home invasion and attack all played out in front of two of the couple's young children.

Hunia then fled in the family car, crashing it after reaching high speeds throughout Melbourne's east.

When arrested, he told police he was so drunk he couldn't remember the incident.

“Every day, we have to deal with our psychological and physiological scars,” Senior Constable Yeoman, who suffered nerve damage and a fractured cheek bone said outside court.

“It's been difficult … every day is another day. We have to move forward and we just have to try to keep getting better."

His wife Shereen Yeoman, who has suffered post-traumatic stress disorder since the crime, said "it's difficult not knowing why" this happened.

The court heard Hunia was on four sets of bail at the time for other alleged armed robberies and assaults.

The judge noted he has shown no remorse and declined to sentence him to youth detention.

He must serve a minimum term of four years jail before being eligible for parole.
