A taxi driver has been viciously attacked with a meat cleaver in an attempted robbery in Melbourne’s south-east.

The terrifying ordeal occurred when the cabbie attempted to pick up passengers in Catherine Eddy Place in Hampton Park on May 18.

Shocking security footage of the incident reveals the moment three young men get inside the vehicle.

One man sat in the passenger seat and held a meat clever to the driver’s throat while a back seat passenger placed a rope around his neck and tightening it around his throat.

The men demanded cash and then fled on foot with the driver’s backpack. Thankfully, the driver escaped unharmed.

The driver’s employer said it was appalled at the gang’s behaviour.

“Disgusting – we’re shocked. We can’t stand this kind of event happening,” Simon Purssey of 13CABS said.

“This is like out of a movie.”

Police continue to investigate into the incident and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
