Suburban football match abandoned after brawl

A suburban football match has descended into chaos after a wild brawl broke out among rival teams in Melbourne's east.

The game in Oakleigh had to be abandoned on Friday night.

A goal before half-time in the match between Oakleigh Cannons and Dandenong Thunder saw hundreds of fans descend onto the pitch.

Some allegedly threw items at police, who were called.

Three people were injured.

The Oakleigh Canons were leading 2-0 after the goal, which is said to have infuriated the rival team's fans.

Football Victoria said it was investigating, saying it "condemns all forms of anti-social behaviour and violence".

It wants fans to send footage from the event.

Police are investigating but have not had any formal complaints.

Oakleigh's next match against Altona will now be played behind closed doors.
