Melbourne shivers through wintry weekend

Racegoers shivered through the second coldest Cox Plate in history with temperatures reaching just 13.2C in Melbourne on Saturday, will temperatures expected to stay chilly on Sunday.

The coldest Cox Plate in the event's 94-year history was in 1970 when the mercury only hit 12.9C.

Saturday's 13.2C maximum was the coldest October day since October 15 in 2010 when a top of 12.7 was recorded.

Sunday isn't expected to be much better either, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a brisk 14C.

Melbourne is so chilly at the moment due to a large mass of cold air which has travelled up from the Southern Ocean.

"Days below 14C are relatively rare particularly in the second half of October," bureau senior forecaster Rod Dickson told AAP.

"These sort of temperatures are more normal in June and July. They are winter-time temperatures more than late Spring."

Melbourne will warm up slightly in the coming week with Tuesday the pick of the bunch with 24C forecast before a late change.
