Melburnians have been served a stark reminder that winter is coming with the city shivering through the coldest night of the year so far.

Melbourne experienced its chilliest night since September 2013 as the temperature hit a low of 4.3C in the early hours of Thursday.

The mercury hovered about one or two degrees in most Victorian suburbs while the Yarra Valley plunged into the negatives, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

"It was the coldest in Melbourne since September 13 last year and the coldest May morning since 2011," senior forecaster Rod Dickson told AAP.

Despite the cold blast, Victoria's alps missed out on a dusting of snow.

The temperature in Melbourne is expected to reach 18C on Thursday before dropping to eight degrees overnight, with 18C again expected on Friday.
