Police arson experts investigate Melbourne restaurant fire after suspects reported running from scene

Police in Melbourne are investigating a fire at a restaurant in the city's Docklands overnight.

Emergency services were called to the Glenti Place property following reports of suspicious activity about 2.50am today.

Police have been told three offenders were seen smashing the window of the restaurant before a suspected accelerant set it alight.

The suspects were seen running away before leaving in a vehicle.

A crime scene has been set up and an arson chemist and investigators will begin inquiries.

Detectives will investigate whether the fire is linked to a recent spate of arson attacks.

Victoria Police's taskforce Lunar are treating the fires as suspicious and believe they are linked to an eight-month series of arson attacks across the state, mostly targeting tobacco stores.

At least 28 tobacco stores have been targeted by arsonists as disputes involving Middle Eastern crime groups escalate.
