Police believe body found on Melbourne CBD street was either pushed or fell from apartment above

A man's body was found on one of Melbourne's busiest streets in the early hours of the morning.

Patrolling police discovered the man's body on Collins Street, near to Spencer Street in the city's CBD, in the middle of the footpath at 4.15am.

The circumstances surrounding the man's death, as well as who he is, are still being investigated and authorities say they can't rule out murder.

"The area was cordoned off while officers processed the scene," Victoria Police said in a statement.

Police and forensic teams were seen working in the area throughout the day, with officers door-knocking on local apartments.

They've been trying to find answers all day but at this stage all authorities know is that the man either fell or was pushed from an apartment high above where his body was discovered.

The injuries sustained by the man, believed to be in his 40s, are very significant.

Police have sent off his fingerprints in the hopes of identifying the man.
