New Melbourne parking app causing a stir with motorists

EasyPark in, PayStay out: it's a change that has caused some anger from many Melbourne residents.

It's a new hit for visitors to Melbourne's CBD, with motorists being charged more to pay for on-street parking within the City of Melbourne.

The contract to run the city's meters changed hands at the end of March, which has brought about the change.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the change was about providing the best technology and best flexibility for users.

But some app users say different.

"It was frustrating," one told 9News.

Users will be hit with a 10 per cent service fee on each transaction when using the app, adding 70 cents to the cost of an hour of parking.

"That's a bloody outrage... my gosh," another person told 9News.

Currently, about 40 per cent of drivers use an app to pay for parking - a figure that is expected to grow.

Ms Capp said the app was optional.

"If you want to use meters, you can pay cash or credit - there is no change," she said.
