A Melbourne dad attacked with a machete fears the men who tried to steal his van could return.

Indranil Pal screamed for help as the would-be-thieves bashed at his car's windows in Doveton last night.

The 38-year-old had locked himself inside his Mercedes van after confronting the men in his driveway.

"It's like a nightmare, man," Mr Pa told 9News.

"He just started to hit [the window] with the machete to break the glass."

"The second man hit it right here," said Mr Pal, pointing to his shattered side mirror.

"He was so angry."

The father-of-one was sharing drinks with two friends at his home on Nigra Street last night, one day after his wife and son had left for a holiday in India.

They ran to his aid after hearing his cries for help and used a tricycle they found in the front yard to push the man off the property.

"They just came out and otherwise I would have been in hospital man, I'm telling you," said a relieved Mr Pal.

Police were called to the property to investigate the attack. 9NEWS

One of his heroes was hit in the head with the baton, which was dropped at the scene.

"He's very old and he got bleeding and fell down," Mr Pal said of his injured friend.

"[One offender] started screaming, 'come one by one. I'm going to kill you.'"

Police have seized the metal weapon and have dusted Indranil's van for fingerprints today.

No arrests have been made.
