Police are probing a bus and car crash in Melbourne’s north-east which left two men in hospital.

Detectives believe a silver SUV veered onto the wrong side of Fitzsimons Lane, Tempelstowe, and collided head-on with the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) bus just before 2pm.

The bus driver, a Berwick man aged in his 40s, suffered abdominal injuries and was taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, Ambulance Victoria told 9News.

The Montmorency man behind the wheel of the car was also taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, but with abdominal and hip injuries.

A third person was also assessed by paramedics at the scene, but did not require further treatment.

The bus was carrying five passengers, who all escaped injury.

Fitzsimons Lane had now re-opened between Eltham and Templestowe, after earlier closures triggered heavy delays in the area.

Police are now seeking information from anyone who saw the SUV prior to the crash.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
