Melbourne motorcyclist to be charged after blaming 'thief' for speeding

A Melbourne man who allegedly told police his motorbike had been stolen before it was clocked doing nearly 60km/h over the limit is set to be charged with making a false report.

Yesterday afternoon, police recorded two motorcycles travelling at about 117km/h in a 60km/h zone in Sunshine North.

The riders then evaded pursuit by speeding off.

But a plate number was taken and police contacted the owner, who told them his bike had been stolen.

Last night, the motorcycle was found locked and secured at Taylors Reserve.

Police impounded the motorcycle and intend to charge its 25-year-old owner with speeding, evade police and make false report, they said in a statement.

The second rider is yet to be identified.
