Melbourne man suspected of fatally stabbing Good Samaritan arrested after nine-hour standoff with police

Police have revealed a man stabbed to death in Melbourne’s west at the weekend was a Good Samaritan who’d intervened in a fight.

His suspected killer is in police custody, his arrest coming after a dramatic nine-hour siege.

The 21-year-old man at the centre of the siege and his pregnant girlfriend had been holed up inside the Blackshaws Road home in Altona North for hours.

Police surrounded the property at 2am (AEDT) this morning, the man inside accused of stabbing a 46-year-old Altona dad on Sunday afternoon.

It’s alleged the father of two saw the accused and his girlfriend fighting on the side of the road and, acting as a Good Samaritan, tried to intervene.

“He saw the dispute, it was quite violent - he left his car and stopped, and has approached the two and was fatally stabbed as a result,” Acting Inspector Stuart Bailey said.

Police negotiated with the suspect and his partner until 11am this morning, when the accused walked out peacefully.

“It appears he wasn’t armed – [it] was a fantastic amount of work by the special operations group other support services,” Act Insp Bailey said.
