A Melbourne man now in Syria has been placed on a United Nations financial terror sanctions list by Australia.

It will be a criminal offence, punishable by 10 years' jail, for anyone to directly or indirectly provide material support to Australian citizen Neil Prakash.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Prakash had sought to commission terror acts in Australia, use social media to spread violent extremism and recruit young women and girls to travel to Syria, and Iraq to join Islamic State.
