A Melbourne man is in hospital after offenders in a stolen BMW deliberately ran him over in the city’s north on Easter Sunday.

Jeremy Salas told 9NEWS he was driving to visit a friend when he stopped at the red light on the intersection of Epping Road and Craigieburn Road East, in Wollert.

A silver BMW X3 pulled up beside him, and the occupants began throwing bottles at his car.

Mr Salas followed the offenders, trying to get the registration number, when the BMW abruptly stopped.

The mechanic was forced to swerve, then got out of the car to wave down the BMW.

The offenders then pulled up behind Mr Salas and nudged him, before reversing and accelerating to run over the left side of the victim’s body.

“I saw the headlights coming for me again. I thought that was it. I thought these guys are out to kill me,” he said.

“I honestly thought this was this end of me.”

He suffered a broken collarbone, fractured sternum, hip and knee.

Victoria Police described Mr Salas’ ordeal as “shocking.”

“He was just an innocent person going about his everyday business,” a police spokesman said.
