'It makes sense': Melbourne lord mayor throws support behind six weather seasons
Melbourne's lord mayor is calling for two more seasons to be added into the annual rotation to suit the city's unique weather patterns.
Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece has thrown his support behind changing the city's recognised seasons from four to six in accordance with Wurundjeri culture.
"In the Wurundjeri calendar, there's a wet summer and a dry summer and a wet winter and a dry winter," Reece told 3AW.

"When you think about it, it makes sense. But we have gone and superimposed the four seasons essentially from Northern Europe here in Melbourne.
"They don't really match up with the weather patterns that we experienced over the 12 months."
The mayor said the idea was introduced at the Melbourne 2050 Summit hosted in May, which saw nearly 1000 people discuss the Victorian capital's future.
Reece defended the seasonal change and said it "makes sense" to have a system created by Indigenous people who have lived here for tens of thousands of years.

He said Melbourne should follow Singapore's structure, which does not follow the traditional summer, winter, autumn and spring seasons and instead is dictated by weather patterns like monsoons.
"When you actually look at [the calendar and the seasons], you realise, hey, that actually does line up better with the hot periods, cold periods, dry periods, wet periods that we experience every year, other than the European seasons," he said.
"Don't just rule it out, I would like you to think about it."

According to the Royal Society of Victoria, the Wurundjeri seasons are dry season from January and February, eel season in March, wombat season from April to July, orchid season in August, tadpole season in September and October, grass flowering season in November and kangaroo-apple season in December.
The seasons were determined by an ecology of factors including flora, fauna and the weather.
