Searchers have located the body of a Melbourne hiker who went missing in Werribee Gorge.

David Occhipinti was reported missing after failing to return from a walk of the 10-kilometre circuit yesterday afternoon.

His body was located by searchers at the base of the gorge about 7pm, police said in a statement.

A report will now be prepared for the coroner.

Mr Occhipinti's classic Holden was found locked and empty in the main car park on Myers Road last night.

Family left a note for the missing hiker in the car’s window, asking him to contact police and let them know he's okay.

A widespread search was launched for the 35-year-old, with the SES and Parks Victoria staff scouring all four available tracks this morning.

Police admitted that a lack of communications was proving a challenge.

It's understood Mr Occhipinti was carrying minimal supplies of water and food.
