Anti-trans demonstrators clash with police in Melbourne

Violent scenes unfolded in Melbourne this afternoon as anti-trans demonstrators clashed with police and counter-protesters on Spring Street.

A huge police presence was seen outside Melbourne's state parliament, called in to oversee a rally organised by feminist group "Women Will Speak".

Police officers used capsicum spray when some activists tried to break through a police line and two protestors were arrested.

Victoria Police said they were "confronted by hostile members of the crowd who acted out violently towards police.

"We have a long history of supporting peaceful protest but will not tolerate disgraceful and unlawful behaviour."

Approximately 100 people attended the rally around 12pm today.

Also present were counter-organisations from the queer and trans community campaigning for their rights.

A Herald Sun photographer was reportedly knocked and injured in the chaos.

Two women aged in their 20s were arrested at the rally and they are expected to be charged on summons.
