Sporting authorities are investigating after a match erupted into chaos in Melbourne, as a mob of fired-up fans bashed a player in the crowd who was already injured.
It's believed a verbal disagreement sparked the fight at Altona North, in the city's south-west.
Newport fans turned on a Wyndham Vale player who was watching the division two seniors play on Saturday afternoon.

Police had to be called, though the player involved hasn't made a complaint. The others involved left the scene.
It's understood the player wasn't badly hurt.
The Western Region Football League said it was investigating and had a zero tolerance approach towards violence.
