Sporting authorities are investigating after a match erupted into chaos in Melbourne, as a mob of fired-up fans bashed a player in the crowd who was already injured.

It's believed a verbal disagreement sparked the fight at Altona North, in the city's south-west.

Newport fans turned on a Wyndham Vale player who was watching the division two seniors play on Saturday afternoon.

It's understood the player wasn't badly hurt.

The Western Region Football League said it was investigating and had a zero tolerance approach towards violence.
