Conditions are beginning to clear at Melbourne Airport after thick fog blanketed the city, causing commuter chaos this morning.

Thousands of customers were forced to change their travel plans, following the cancellation of 18 flights after conditions reduced visibility to just 50 metres at Tullamarine.

Eight domestic flights with Qantas were halted, along with six Virgin flights and two Jetstar and Tiger flights.

Many passengers had to suffer through wait-times of more than three hours, but told 9NEWS they were “understanding”.

Delays are expected to affect customers for the remainder of today, and possibility into tomorrow.

The airport has advised travellers to check with the respective airline for the status of flights.

This morning’s foggy skies also slowed down motorists, with drivers told to keep their headlights on low beam.

Tomorrow conditions are expected to be clearer, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a partly cloudy day with a top of 26 degrees.
