A Melbourne father has retraced the night he was randomly beaten outside his home in an unprovoked attack, as police continue to hunt the perpetrator.

John Sloan, who has been living in a church on Cameron Street in Kalkallo that he used to maintain, was approached by a man while he was returning home on September 27.

The 62-year-old said the attacker assaulted him several times, leaving him with broken legs, a fractured skull, and a dislocated shoulder.

“I just started feeling pain of everything, I sort of just went down,” Mr Sloan told 9NEWS.

“There was no noise, it was just thug, thug, thug.

“They put so much effort into disabling me.”

Mr Sloan said he crawled towards the door of his home, trying to escape the repeated blows from his attacker.

Detectives have searched the church ground twice, but have been unable to find any leads and are now appealing to the public for new information.

“He was hit several times along the head, legs and arms, possibly with a weapon,” Detective Constable Grace Botterill said.

“These were terrible injuries…Any information would be highly useful to police.

“The locals all know him and speak very favourably of him. He helps everyone around the community…they can’t speak of him highly enough.”

Mr Sloan just started a new job at a panel beaters in Niddrie but will not be able to work as he faces up to eight weeks of rehabilitation.

“I’m scared now, I never was, I used to stand up for myself and that,” Mr Sloan said.

“I just want to hide.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
