Melbourne fastest growing capital: ABS

More people are moving to Melbourne than any other capital in Australia.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says Melbourne's growth is "fast and furious", with an average of 1760 people moving in every week in 2014-15.

Melbourne's population increased by 91,600 in 2014-15, slightly ahead of Sydney with 83,300.

But Sydney is tipped to surpass five million people "sometime this year" to remain as Australia's largest city.

Data showed the largest population explosion in Australia was in Melbourne's outer fringes, with the suburbs of Cranbourne East, South Morang, Epping and Point Cook having the largest growth of any area.
