Toddler killed, girl seriously injured after tree falls on house in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges

A toddler has died and a young girl seriously injured after a tree fell on a house at The Patch, in Melbourne's outer east during severe thunderstorms last night.

Seven people were trapped in the two-storey home on View Road at about 9pm, with six managing to escape.

The two-year-old boy died after being found by search and rescue teams, while a five-year-old girl was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital with serious head, chest and leg injuries.

It was one of two deaths attributed to the wild storm conditions overnight, with a man in his late teens killed when his car rolled over in Colac.

Two adults were also injured on what was a chaotic night for Victorians.

The Victorian SES received around 1200 calls for assistance overnight while 70,000 were left without power.

Most requests for help were for fallen trees, with 550 calls in the Melbourne area.

The severe thunderstorms and damaging winds smashed Victoria as a cool change moved through on the final day of summer.
