Melbourne endures its coldest four-day stint for mid November in 167 years

Melbourne has endured its coldest four-day stint for this late in November in 167 years of weather records, while Canberra is also experiencing an exceptionally cold spell.

Temperatures in Melbourne have stayed below 15.5C for the past four days — from Friday to Monday — averaging a maximum of just 14.4C.

The four-day stint is the coldest period this late in the year ever recorded, Weatherzone's senior meteorologist Brett Dutschke said.

The Bureau of Meteorology said today was the coldest November day since 2006, with the temperature in Melbourne only getting as high as 13.5C.

Melbourne's average maximum temperature so far this month is 19.2C, compared to the usual November average of 22C.

Victoria has experienced a cold and windy period, with 130km/h winds recorded in Wilsons Promontory at 11.08pm on Sunday and heavy rainfall across the state in the past week.

Canberra is also having its coldest spell this late in the year in 99 years of records, according to Weatherzone, with the city recording weather no warmer than 14C for the past three days.

Meanwhile, snow is falling in Australia's alps just two weeks before summer.

Snowfalls on the alps have amounted to 15 to 30cm.

A small amount of snow has fallen as low as about 800 metres in southern New South Wales and Victoria and as low as about 200 metres in Tasmania.
