Melbourne dad fighting for zebra crossing at school after his son was hit by a car

A Melbourne father said his local council is putting student safety at risk by ignoring his ongoing fight for a zebra crossing outside his son's school.

Andrew Badge began his campaign when his son Jensen was hit by a car leaving St Mary's Primary School in Ascot Vale.

Ever since Mr Badge has been lobbying the Moonee Valley Council to take action.

"It is frustrating when you continue to see safety issues," he told 9News.

A Melbourne father says his local council is putting student safety at risk by ignoring his ongoing fight for a zebra crossing outside his son's school.

Andrew Badge began his campaign when his son Jensen was hit by a car leaving St Mary's Primary School in Ascot Vale six years ago.

Ever since Mr Badge has been lobbying the Moonee Valley Council to take action.

"It is frustrating when you continue to see safety issues," he told 9News.

Jensen did not suffer serious injuries following the incident, but his mother Anouk Lomard said it was a terrifying ordeal.

"You know how people say things happen in slow motion? It was literally in slow motion - my son was there - then all of a sudden a car collected him and there was nothing in front of me - he was completely gone," she said.

St Mary's Principal Paul Hogan agrees a zebra crossing is necessary.

"It is just an accident waiting to happen around here," he said.

And young Jensen, the victim of what could have been a dire accident is also advocating for change.

"I want them to fix it, it's a bad situation."

The Moonee Valley council has repeatedly rejected Mr Badge's pleas for a zebra crossing, initially claiming the school wasn't big enough to warrant one.

But he says a 2018 council study indicated the level of traffic far exceeded requirements.

While a zebra crossing has never eventuated, a few years ago the council did give St Mary's the walking school bus award - part of an initiative aimed at encouraging students to walk to and from school.

But Mr Badge saw this as another slap in the face.

"It ends up being quite a fight, and it comes down to the dollars," he said.

Moonee Valley says funding has finally been allocated, but the setbacks continue.

"Within this year they've delayed it six times already," Mr Badge said.

Ms Lombard said the council has offered no consistency in their decision-making.

"We get a yes, then a no, then a yes - then it's going to happen - no it's not going to happen," she said.

"Now - hopefully with a voice - and everyone hearing the story - maybe we'll get some action now."

Late this afternoon Moonee Valley confirmed to 9News a zebra crossing and speed humps will be completed outside St Mary's in the June school holidays.

Mr Badge said this time that promise must be kept.

"There's nothing holding you back - get it done."
