Australia 'ready' to host 2022 World Cup

Australia is ready to host the 2022 World Cup if the event is stripped from Qatar as a result of corruption allegations.

But Melbourne wants to change the original Australian bid and host the final at the MCG.

"We could step in, we could help out. We are prepared to take on that challenge. For us, it comes easy," Victorian Sports Minister John Eren told reporters on Thursday.

Mr Eren said Australia already had great stadiums, and despite controversies over the original bid, the plan held up.

"Once you see the allegations being made it maybe didn't matter what campaign you had," he said.

The original bid had Sydney down to host the final at Stadium Australia, but Mr Eren said "the sporting capital of the world" deserved the main event.

The AFL has first dibs on the MCG and Etihad Stadium and recently dug its heels in to force the A-League grand final to be played at the smaller AAMI Park.

But Mr Eren was confident the footy community would support a global event held in Australia.

"We're big enough to accept there are lots of other codes that share this wonderful state," he said.

"Soccer and football get along quite well."

Some fine tuning would be needed to get infrastructure and transport ready, he said.

Mr Eren named the MCG, Etihad Stadium, AAMI Park and Geelong's Simonds Stadium as venues in Victoria, although only the MCG was part of the original bid.

The 30,000-seat AAMI Park and the soon-to-be 36,000-seat Simonds Stadium are below the minimum size for FIFA, while Etihad Stadium was reserved for AFL games in the Australian bid.

Mr Eren said Melbourne's experience hosting the Asian Cup, the Cricket World Cup, the Grand Prix and the Australian Open shows it can handle huge crowds.

NSW Premier Mike Baird later said he would do whatever was necessary to secure the final for Sydney if the tournament was stripped from Qatar.

Hosting a World Cup would be an incredible opportunity not just for NSW but Australia, he said.

"I've seen comments that people wouldn't want to undertake such a bid unless there was reform in FIFA but I can assure you we'll be the first state to sign up if we're given a green light on that.

"The World Cup would be a world event that we'd be very proud to host and we'd do everything that we needed to do to put us in a position to secure it."
