'Crategate': controversy dogs multi-million dollar Sydney art project

A Melbourne artist has demanded answers after pointing out the similarities between one of his own pieces and a $2.5 million work commissioned by the City of Sydney.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore announced yesterday that Pavilion, by Hany Armanious, would provide a public gathering place in Belmore Park in the city's centre.

An artist's impression of the work showed it would take the form of a large, upside-down milk crate.

However, Melbourne artist Jarrad Kennedy said the work was very similar to his entry in the 2005 McClelland Sculpture Prize, and posted a photo on his Facebook page with the two pieces side-by-side.

He was quick to label the controversy "crategate".

"I was shocked to say the least," he wrote.

Mr Kennedy also said he would be contacting the artist directly.

"The City is confident that Hany Armanious’s Pavilion is an original artwork consistent with his practice of artistic excellence," City of Sydney curatorial adviser Barbara Flynn said.

"The artist has assured us he was unaware of the existence of this particular Melbourne artwork."
