Melb hit-run accused to stay behind bars

A Melbourne man accused of hitting and killing a man in the city's northwest before fleeing will remain behind bars.

Giau Van Nguyen, 64, of Essendon made no application for bail in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday.

He is charged with dangerous driving causing the death of 78-year-old Athanasios Frangis in St Albans on Wednesday, as well as charges of failing to stop and not rendering assistance.

A passer-by called an ambulance after Mr Frangis, known as Arthur, was struck just after 9pm, but he died at the scene.

Nguyen was arrested on Friday afternoon.

His lawyer Alex Lewenberg said Nguyen required heart medication.

"Also he has an extremely high blood pressure issue that needs to be addressed," he said.

Mr Lewenberg indicated Nguyen would make a bail application when the returns to the same court for a filing hearing on Thursday.

Magistrate Alan Spillane remanded him in custody until then.
