P-plate driver accused of fatal hit-run remains behind bars

A tearful young driver will remain behind bars charged over the hit-and-run death of a cyclist in Melbourne.

Mehdi Sameri, 20, returned to Melbourne Magistrates Court today for a filing hearing after being charged over the death of Colin Waters yesterday.

Sameri allegedly struck 49-year-old Mr Waters at Taylors Lakes about 6.40 am.

Mr Waters died at the scene and Sameri is accused of fleeing the scene before handing himself in to police about 50 minutes later.

Sameri faces six charges including culpable, dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop and render assistance.

During the brief court appearance, an order was made regarding CCTV footage which will be used in the prosecution case.

Sameri used his T-shirt to wipe away tears and mouthed words at his sobbing partner and family members.

The magistrate was told it was the 20-year-old’s first time in custody.

His lawyer did not apply for bail. She told the court Sameri had “long-standing mental health issues” and requested he be seen by a medical practitioner or psychiatric nurse.

Sameri is due to return to court on October 17 for a committal mention.
