Mehajer cabbie case will proceed: court

A noticeably slimmer and tired-looking Salim Mehajer has appeared before a Sydney magistrate, arguing he should be freed on bail because of his many work commitments.

The former deputy mayor of Auburn told the court he needed to be released because he has a “number of commercial matters on foot” and custody was causing him “massive business disruptions”.

Mr Mehajer wanted the magistrate to hear his bail application immediately, but was told he would need to wait until next Wednesday.

The businessman has been left without legal representation in a case where he’s accused of assaulting a taxi driver, after his lawyer Brett Galloway withdrew yesterday, claiming he had been placed in an “ethical dilemma”. 

Mr Mehajer is currently representing himself.

“It’s been difficult to contact my legal representatives,” he told the court.

“That’s why I am going to represent myself.”

Magistrate Vivien Swain also warned Mr Mehajer against drawing out the legal process surrounding the matter.

“I want you understand Mr Mehajer that this matter will proceed whether you are ready or not,” Magistrate Swain said.

That assault case will be heard on February 28.
