A young man has been struck in the head with an axe during a mock medieval battle.
The blow to the head was so forceful, the axe penetrated the 21-year-old's helmet during the organised battle at the Winterfest Sydney Medieval Fair at Hawkesbury Showground at 11am today.
The man, who travelled from Victoria to participate, sustained lacerations to his head, according to a CareFlight spokesperson.

NSW Police said the axe used in the battle re-enactment was a replica.
"The axe appears to have deflected off the 21-year-old's shoulders and gone underneath his helmet where he sustained a large cut to the back of his head," a NSW spokesperson told 9News.
He was treated at the showground by a critical care team before being loaded on to a CareFlight helicopter.

He was airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
