Gold Coast and Tweed Heads residents have been warned about a potential measles outbreak on the tourist strip.

The Gold Coast Public Health Unit says a Tweed resident has been diagnosed with the highly infectious disease and has also spent time on the southern parts of the Gold Coast.

The patient, who conducts deliveries as part of their work, may have exposed others to the disease from Sunday to Friday last week.

Specialist Dr Paul Van Buynder has warned people in the area not protected against measles to be alert for symptoms.

He said the time from exposure to the onset of symptoms was typically between eight and 18 days.
