Measles scare on Qld's Sunshine Coast

People who dined or worked at a Sunshine Coast RSL club last Thursday night could have been exposed to measles.

Queensland Health issued the warning after confirming a male has caught the disease and attended the Caloundra RSL between 5.30pm and 7.30pm while infectious.

Measles is one of the most infectious of all communicable diseases.

It spreads by tiny droplets through coughing and sneezing and can last several hours in the environment.

Sunshine Coast public health unit director, Dr Andrew Langley, said everyone should make sure they are vaccinated.

"We are seeing a number of cases in Queensland of people who have acquired measles interstate or overseas who may unknowingly spread the virus in public places," he said.

The initial symptoms are fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore and red eyes, followed a few days later by a blotchy red rash.
