Measles alert at University of Queensland

Students at a Brisbane university have been warned to be on the lookout for measles symptoms after a confirmed case of the highly contagious disease on campus.

A student attended lectures at the University of Queensland's Faculty of Business, St Lucia, while infectious on Wednesday July 29, Friday July 31 and Monday.

The patient also took public transport to and from South Bank and visited a cafe, pharmacy and health clinic on the campus.

Queensland Health has warned anyone who was in the vicinity of the student to watch for symptoms, including a cough, runny nose, fever or rash.

"Symptoms usually start around 7 to 10 days after contact with an infectious person, but sometimes longer, so anyone who develops measles-like symptoms within the next fortnight should contact their GP for advice," Queensland Health's Dr Kari Jarvinen said.

"It is very important to call the medical practice first to say you could have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading the disease to others."

The department has warned further cases could develop in Brisbane over coming weeks due to the large number of people potentially exposed to the student.

Measles cases are typically the result of overseas travel.

Approximately 30 per cent of adults who catch the disease are treated in hospital, although complications are uncommon.

Anyone who has received two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine is very unlikely to contract measles.
