As fireworks lit up the Sydney skyline to ring in the new year, golfer Rory McIlroy was presenting tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki with a ring of her own.

The former world No.1 golfer proposed to the former world No.1 tennis ace in Sydney and took to Twitter to announce the outcome.

"Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!" he wrote.

Wozniacki, in the country for the Australian Open, also took to the social network to share the news, together with a picture of the massive new rock on her finger.

"Happy new year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!"

The announcement may come as a surprise to some as the pair had reportedly broken up in September after Wozniacki tweeted an unflattering photo of McIlroy without his knowledge.

Rumours continued to circulate about the pair's split until the 23-year-old tennis ace put an end to them the following month.

"I'm so tired of the rumours," she said, according to USA Today.

"They occur every time Rory and I are apart a few days or do not write on Twitter. There is nothing in it, and from now on I just think that I will keep my private life private."

McIlroy, who started the year as the world's top golfer, struggled on the PGA Tour and finished the year at sixth.

His wife-to-be, who pulled out of the Brisbane International because of a shoulder injury, will be hunting for her first Grand Slam title when the Australian Open begins on January 13.
