McEwen one-punch accused 'broke curfew'

The 20-year-old man who allegedly left one-punch victim Michael McEwen in a coma last year was on curfew at the time and should not have been on the streets, court documents have revealed.

The man, from Kariong in NSW's Central Coast, was today formally refused bail at Gosford local court over the December Bondi assault, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Under the curfew, he was supposed to stay at home between the hours of 8pm and 7am as he waited sentencing on a charge of reckless wounding.

But he reportedly broke this when he and his friend Jamie Ennis had drinks at a Bondi bar late into the night, then went to a kebab shop where they allegedly argued with patrons and staff.

The man, who cannot be named as he was a juvenile when the curfew was imposed, is believed to have struck Mr McEwen with his elbow or fist as the 23-year-old victim tried to calm him down.

Mr McEwen was discharged from hospital last month and has surprised doctors with his recovery who initially feared he would not walk again.

The man will appear in court again on Monday.
