Homeowner, 87, confronts offender during robbery as thieves target home impacted by McCrae landslide

An intruder fled empty-handed after being confronted by an 87-year-old homeowner on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula yesterday.

Detectives believe the unknown individual broke into a home about 10am on View Point Road in McCrae, just a street away from the landslide earlier this year.

He fled the scene after being confronted by the homeowner.

Detectives are investigating the incident along with a series of other burglaries in McCrae last week.

Police said eight vacant properties on Point Nepean Road were targeted about 3.30am on Friday.

It's understood the homes were previously evacuated following a landslide earlier this year.

Mornington Peninsula Shire mayor Anthony Marsh told Nine's 3AW that it was "obviously devastating" for the homeowners affected.

"It's just quite sickening, really," Marsh said last week.

"It's society at its lowest."

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
