Thousands left without power after substation fire in Sydney

Fire has destroyed an electrical substation Sydney's east, cutting power to almost 2000 homes and businesses.

The blaze broke out on Messines Place in Matraville just after 2.30pm.

Video from the scene showed plumes of thick black smoke blanketing the area.

At least 20 people were forced to evacuate surrounding buildings and traffic in the area was also affected.

Around 1900 customers in Maroubra and Matraville were affected by the power cuts.

Power is expected to be restored by 8pm.
