One user had a notification from CommBank saying there is a “global issue.”

“Mastercard payments are being declined due to a global Mastercard issue,” it said.

The message advised them to insert their cart into eftpos machines and try paying that way.

Another shopper in Sydney’s inner west was also unable to pay at a sports shop they told Nine.com.au.

Reddit users also said they were having various issues using Mastercard and ApplePay across the country.

Internet tracker Detector logged over 1000 reports of Mastercard not working this afternoon.

Commonwealth Bank said services were starting to coming back at 4pm.

“Mastercard card payments are being restored following a global Mastercard issue,” it said online.

“If customers are still experiencing a decline, please insert your card and select ‘savings’ to make payments via eftpos.”

Mastercard said in a statement: “A scheduled system update caused Mastercard transactions to be declined for a period of time earlier today.

“The situation has been resolved and all systems are working as normal.”
