A man has died after being pulled from the wreckage of his burning car by brave witnesses in the Blue Mountains this morning.

The 36-year-old man lost control of his car and hit a tree off Hawkesbury Road in Hawkesbury Heights about 1.30am.

Two men heroically worked to free him as a large fireball engulfed his vehicle.

"We just saw a car on fire and he was trapped inside. Two of us ran up, pulled the door off and pulled him out," Muhammad Gafoor told 9NEWS.

"It was going up in flames, and we just did the best we could."

The driver was pulled out onto the road until paramedics arrived.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, but later died from his injuries.

A report will now be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone with information should call Blue Mountains Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
