ABC managing director Mark Scott will leave the national broadcaster in mid-2016.

Mr Scott told staff in an email on Monday that the ABC board will soon start the process to select his replacement.

"I have made no secret of the fact that I think 10 years is a long time to run an organisation, particularly in a sector as dynamic and fast-changing as media," he said in the email.

His second term as the head of the government broadcaster ends in July next year.

"I once answered a question of how I got my job at the ABC by giving the simple, honest answer: I responded to the position advertised in the newspaper," he wrote in the email.

"This note is just to tell you that if you are interested in being the next managing director, keep your eye out or an ad in coming months."
