The possibility of a new ice rink in a southwestern Adelaide suburb has sparked excitement from both locals and council.

Marion Arena, to be built on Sturt Road, will include an ice rink with seating for up to 450 spectators as well as rock climbing facilities.

Locals said they were thrilled by the idea currently being promoted by Marion City Council.

"I think it will be a fantastic idea," resident Kym said.

"I know a lot of young people that would love to have an opportunity to come and skate here at Marion."

The 10,000 square metre site previously housed the Marion Croquet Club.

The council said construction should begin next year if everything goes to plan.

"It's going to be a great recreation opportunity," Mayor Kris Hanna said.

"This is going to be insanely popular, if we can get this over the line, get it built, this is going to be huge."

The new rink could open the possibility for international and national ice sports tournaments in Marion.
