WHAT'S NEXT FOR SPEAKER BRONWYN BISHOP?

* POLICE

Labor MP Pat Conroy asked the Australian Federal Police to investigate. AFP has now referred it back to the Finance Department.

* AUDITOR

Greens senator Lee Rhiannon has asked the auditor-general for an assessment. The auditor has declined to comment.

* FINANCE

The Speaker has asked the Department of Finance to review all of her expense claims, not just transport charters and wedding trips. It is usual practice for the department to produce a "preliminary assessment" for comment by the MP it is investigating. But if there is anything "serious" discovered the matter gets referred to a committee chaired by the finance department secretary, and a further comment can be sought from the MP. If the committee is not satisfied with the answer, it can seek the advice of the secretary of the attorney-general's department as to whether it should be referred to the AFP. The finance secretary then advises the Special Minister of State and Justice Minister of the intended referral and it goes to the AFP. Any further action is up to the AFP.

* PARLIAMENT

Independent MPs Clive Palmer and Andrew Wilkie plan to move a no confidence motion on August 10 when parliament resumes. Labor is still determining its strategy. However, the coalition has the numbers to defeat such a motion.
